Our take on the KONG Retractable Dog Leash

The KONG Retractable Dog Leash is a tape-style retractable lead sold in small and large sizes, with the small version extending to 5 metres. It comes in black and uses a thumb-slide brake and lock, the standard control layout for this type of leash. KONG is known for tough rubber toys, so the leash leans on that brand reputation rather than on any unusual mechanism. No current price was supplied, so check the live comparison for where it sits against its recent range.

Pros
  • 5 metres of length on the small size gives room to roam

  • KONG brand with a long track record in dog products
  • Available in small and large sizes for different dogs
Cons
  • Tape or cord can slacken and cause tangles if not kept taut

What reviewers say

Retractable leash owners generally value the freedom of length but often report brake wear and tangling over time. KONG's pet gear tends to be seen as sturdy for the price. Specific feedback on this leash model is limited, so treat brand reputation as the main signal.

Questions and answers

Is a retractable leash good for a small dog?
It suits calm small dogs on open walks where you want variable length. For pullers or road walking, a fixed lead gives more control.
How long is the KONG retractable leash?
The small size extends to 5 metres. The large size length was not specified, so confirm it on the product page before buying.
Does it have a brake and lock?
Yes, it uses the standard thumb-slide brake and lock found on retractable leashes. Press to brake, slide to lock at a set length.
Is it worth it over a cheap retractable leash?
KONG's reputation for sturdy pet gear is the main reason to pay more. Compare the live price against budget options before deciding.
When is the best time to buy it?
Pet gear often dips during seasonal sales and holiday promotions. Check the price history chart to see whether the current price is above or below its usual level.
What comes in the box?
Expect the leash housing with the retracted tape and a wrist strap. Confirm the exact contents on the listing, since bundles vary by store.
