Is the Ktaxon GTL worth it for a beginner?

Yes, if you budget for a setup or do one yourself. The body, neck and scale length are standard, and the bundle covers the basics. At $79.99 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it costs less than most starter packs.

What comes in the box?

The guitar, a gig bag, a strap, a connecting cable and a spanner tool. There is no amp, picks or tremolo arm.

Is it good for rock and metal?

It handles clean and light overdrive well. For heavy distortion the single coils hum and sound thin, so plan on a humbucker swap or a noise gate.

How does it compare to a Squier Strat?

The Squier costs more but has better hardware, fretwork and resale value. The Ktaxon wins on price and includes a bag; the Squier wins on build quality.

Does it need a setup?

Usually yes. Expect to adjust action, intonation and truss rod relief, and check fret ends. A shop setup often costs as much as a third of the guitar, so consider learning to do it yourself.

Only Walmart lists it new at $79.99 as of November 4, 2026, so there is little to compare. Watch for holiday sales at Walmart rather than waiting on other stores.

Our take on the Ktaxon Maple Fingerboard GTL Electric Guitar SS Pickup Sunset Color

The Ktaxon GTL is a budget Strat-style electric guitar with a solid basswood body, bolt-on maple neck, maple fingerboard and two single-coil pickups. It uses the standard 25.5-inch scale and 22 frets, so it feels familiar to anyone who has played a Strat copy. It ships as a bundle with a gig bag, strap, cable and truss-rod wrench. At $79.99 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it is near the bottom of the starter-guitar market, and only one store lists it new, so there is little price competition to wait for.
