The Ludwig Classic Oak Downbeat is a three-piece shell pack — 20x14 bass drum, 12x8 rack tom, 14x14 floor tom — built from a maple core with American red oak inner and outer plies. That oak/maple sandwich gives it a punchier, brighter attack than Ludwig's all-maple Classic Maple, with the warmth of maple underneath. Snare, cymbals and hardware are not included, so budget for those separately. At $2,099.97 at Guitar Center as of November 7, 2026, it sits at the top of its recent range; five stores list it new, so compare before buying.

Owners of the Classic Oak line generally praise the build quality and the bright, cutting tone, and Downbeat-size players like the compact footprint. Most criticism centers on the price and on how much extra gear the shell pack requires.
