Our take on the Makita 40V Cordless 1/2 in Impact Wrench

The Makita 40V 1/2 in Impact Wrench is a cordless XGT-series tool for heavy fastening: lug nuts, suspension bolts and structural hardware. It runs on Makita's 40V lithium-ion platform, spins up to 2,300 RPM and weighs 4.4 lb, so it is lighter than many corded and high-torque cordless rivals. It is a bare tool in most listings, so the battery and charger cost extra unless you already own XGT packs. No current price was provided for this page, so check the price history before buying.

Questions and answers

Is the Makita 40V impact wrench worth it?
It is worth it if you already own Makita 40V XGT batteries and need cordless torque for lug nuts and suspension work. If you are starting from scratch, budget for batteries and a charger, which can cost as much as the tool.
Does it come with a battery and charger?
Most listings are bare tool only, so no battery or charger is included. Check the listing contents before ordering, or buy a kit version if you need everything.
Can I use my Makita 18V LXT batteries in it?
No. The 40V XGT platform uses different batteries and a different slide mount, so 18V LXT packs will not fit. You need XGT 40V batteries.
How does it compare with the 18V Makita impact wrench?
The 40V version delivers more torque and speed for heavy automotive and structural work. The 18V LXT tools are lighter and cheaper if you mostly drive smaller fasteners.
What size sockets does it take?
It has a 1/2 in square drive, so it takes standard 1/2 in impact-rated sockets. Use impact sockets, not chrome hand sockets, for high-torque work.
When is the best time to buy?
Watch the price history around major sales events and Makita promotions, when bare tools and kits are often discounted. Compare the bare tool price against kit prices, since a kit can be the better value.
