Is the XSH03Z worth it?

It is worth it if you already own Makita 18V LXT batteries. The brushless motor and XPT sealing make it a durable job-site saw. If you are starting from scratch, budget for batteries and a charger.

What is the maximum depth of cut?

At 90 degrees the 6-1/2-inch blade cuts about 2-1/4 inches deep, enough for 2x framing lumber. Depth drops at bevel angles, so check before cutting thick stock at 45 degrees.

Does it come with a battery and charger?

No. The XSH03Z is a bare tool; battery and charger are sold separately. It runs on Makita 18V LXT slide batteries, including the compact versions.

How does it compare with the XSS02?

The XSS02 is the older brushed 6-1/2-inch model. The XSH03Z adds a brushless motor, Automatic Speed Change and XPT, so it runs longer and handles dust better.

Can it cut 2x4s in one pass?

Yes, at 90 degrees a 2x4 is well within its depth of cut. At a 45-degree bevel the depth is reduced, so thick material may need two passes.

Bare-tool prices tend to drop during Makita promotions and holiday sales. Watch the price history and buy when it sits near the low end of its recent range.
