Is $549.99 a good price for this set?

It is the best new price across six stores as of November 7, 2026. Miyabi SG2 sets rarely drop far below this, so it is a fair buy if you want the birchwood line.

Can these knives go in the dishwasher?

No. Miyabi specifies handwash only; heat and detergent can damage the birch handle and the Damascus cladding.

What knives are actually in the set?

An 8-inch chef's knife, a 3.5-inch paring knife, kitchen shears and a honing steel, plus a 12-slot block. The other slots are for knives you add later.

Is SG2 steel too hard for everyday use?

At Rockwell 63 it is harder and more brittle than German steel. It is fine for normal prep but should not cut bone, frozen food or squash.

Is the D-shaped handle right- or left-handed?

The D-shape is molded for right-handed grips. Left-handed users usually find the handle less comfortable.

How does this compare to the Miyabi Kaizen II set?

Kaizen II uses FC61 steel at about Rockwell 61, which is tougher but holds an edge less long. Birchwood SG2 costs more and offers the Damascus finish and birch handle.
