Questions and answers

Is the 100-400mm worth it over the 70-200mm f/2.8?
If you need reach past 200mm for wildlife or sports, yes. The 70-200mm f/2.8 is faster and lighter but much shorter; the 100-400mm trades aperture for range and takes teleconverters.
Does it work with Nikon Z teleconverters?
Yes. It accepts the Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x, giving up to 800mm reach, though the aperture narrows and autofocus slows somewhat.
How good is the stabilization?
Nikon rates it at 5.5 stops of VR, and owners report sharp handheld shots at 400mm in good light. It syncs with in-body stabilization on Z bodies.
How close can it focus?
Minimum focus distance is 75 cm, with 0.38x maximum magnification, enough for near-macro shots of insects and flowers at 400mm.
What is in the box?
The lens, a tripod collar, a petal lens hood, front and rear caps and a soft case. A tripod foot is built into the collar.
When is it cheapest?
It has held near $1,999 at Willoughby's Photo Emporium as of November 6, 2026. Watch for Nikon seasonal sales and bundle deals with Z bodies.
Where is the Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S Lens cheapest?
