Our take on the Novilla Vela 14" Medium Queen Mattress in a Box

The Novilla Vela 14" is a hybrid queen mattress in a box that pairs memory foam with a support core, sold as a medium-feel tight-top bed. At 14 inches it is a tall mattress, so it suits sleepers who want a plusher, deeper feel and a bed that sits high on the frame. It is not adjustable-base compatible, which narrows who should consider it. The latest best price is $399 at Novilla as of November 3, which sits at the low end of its recent range for a 14-inch hybrid queen.

Questions and answers

Is the Novilla Vela 14" worth it?
At $399 at Novilla as of November 3, it is a low-cost way to get a tall hybrid queen. It makes sense if you want a medium feel and do not need an adjustable base.
Does it work with an adjustable base?
No. Novilla lists it as not adjustable-base compatible, so use a flat foundation or box spring instead.
How firm is the medium feel?
It is a true medium: soft enough for side sleepers, but heavy back and stomach sleepers may want more support. Pair it with a firm foundation for a slightly firmer feel.
What sheets fit a 14-inch mattress?
Use deep-pocket sheets rated for 14 to 16 inches. Standard sheets will likely pull off the corners.
How long does it take to expand?
Most foam-in-a-box mattresses like this one reach full height within 24 to 72 hours. Sleep on it after it has fully expanded.
When is it cheapest?
Mattress-in-a-box prices drop around major sales events and holiday weekends. Check the price history before buying.
