Our take on the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm R Lens

The OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm R is a budget telephoto zoom for Micro Four Thirds cameras, covering an 80-300mm full-frame equivalent range. It is light and compact, with an inner focus design and a retracting barrel that keeps it small in a bag. The f/4-5.6 variable aperture keeps the price and weight down. At $116.95 at eBay as of November 3, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range, well under what most stores charge for it new.

Best forMicro Four Thirds owners who want reach on a budgetTravel and hiking kits where weight mattersBeginners adding a first telephoto zoomOutdoor and wildlife shots in good light
Pros
  • Very light and small for a 300mm-equivalent zoom
  • Sharp in the center at mid focal lengths when stopped down slightly
  • Fast, quiet inner focusing that suits video and continuous shooting
  • Close minimum focus distance for near-macro shots
  • Low price for the reach it gives
Cons
  • Plastic mount and body feel less durable than pricier zooms
  • Maximum aperture of f/4-5.6 limits use in low light
  • Corners soften wide open at 150mm
  • No optical stabilization, so it relies on the camera body

Questions and answers

Is the 40-150mm R worth it over the older 40-150mm?
The R version adds a quieter inner-focus motor and a slightly lighter build. Optically they are close, so buy the R for video and faster focusing, or the older lens if you find it cheaper.
Does it fit any camera?
It fits Micro Four Thirds bodies from OM SYSTEM and Olympus, plus Panasonic and other MFT cameras. It will not mount on Canon, Nikon, Sony or Fujifilm bodies without an adapter.
Is the aperture fast enough for indoor sports?
No. At f/4-5.6 it needs good light or high ISO indoors. For indoor action, a faster prime or the f/2.8 40-150mm Pro is the better tool.
Does it have image stabilization?
No. Stabilization comes from the camera body, which most OM SYSTEM and Olympus bodies have. On a body without it, expect to keep shutter speeds up at 150mm.
What comes in the box?
The lens, front and rear caps, and instructions. A hood and case are not included, so budget for a 58mm hood and filters if you want them.
When is it cheapest?
Prices on this lens swing with sales and used listings. The $116.95 eBay price as of November 3, 2026 is near the bottom of its recent range, so it is a good time to buy.
Where is the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm R Lens cheapest?
At Adorama, for $169.99, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm R Lens?

Where can I buy the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm R Lens?
12 stores we checked sell it, including Best Buy, B&H Photo-Video-Audio, Macy's, Walmart, Adorama.
