Our take on the ORICO 97 Series Multi-Bay Type-C External Storage DAS Solution

The ORICO 97 Series is a two-bay external enclosure that turns bare 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA hard drives into USB storage. It connects over USB-C at USB 3.1 Gen1 speeds (5Gbps), with rated read and write around 260MB/s, and supports single drives up to 22TB. It is a plain DAS enclosure, not a NAS: no network port, no RAID controller, no built-in drive. The ABS body has a press-to-open drive door and ships with a USB-C 2-in-1 cable.

Pros
  • USB-C connection works with modern laptops and desktops

Cons

  • No RAID, JBOD spanning or hardware mirroring
  • ABS plastic shell, not metal
  • No network access, so no shared storage across devices
  • Drives sold separately

Questions and answers

Is this a NAS or a plain enclosure?
It is a plain DAS enclosure. There is no network port or RAID controller, so it attaches to one computer over USB-C and shows the drives as local disks.
Does it come with hard drives?
No. You supply your own 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA hard drives. The box includes the enclosure and a USB-C 2-in-1 data cable.
How fast will it actually be?
ORICO rates read and write at about 260MB/s over USB 3.1 Gen1 (5Gbps). Real speed depends on the drive you install; a fast SATA SSD will be limited by the USB link, not the drive.
Can I use SSDs in it?
The listed drive support is HDD only, with SATA I, II and III interfaces. Stick to hard drives unless ORICO confirms SSD support for your specific model.
What is the largest drive it takes?
Single-disk capacity is supported up to 22TB. Total capacity depends on how many bays your model has, either 2 or 5.
Does it work with a Mac?
Yes. It is listed as compatible with macOS, Windows and Linux, and needs no drivers. Macs with USB-C connect directly; older Macs need an adapter.
What do buyers say about the ORICO 97 Series Multi-Bay Type-C External Storage DAS Solution?
Rated 4.3 out of 5 from 57 ratings.
