Our take on the Oru Kayak Lake Starter Bundle

The Lake Starter Bundle pairs Oru's origami-style folding kayak with the gear you need for a first paddle. It is a 9 ft, 17 lb sit-inside recreational kayak that folds from a suitcase-sized pack into a rigid hull in a few minutes. The bundle adds a paddle, pump and other starter accessories, so you avoid buying them separately. It suits calm lakes and flatwater rather than open water or whitewater.

Best forApartment dwellers with no storage spaceCar owners without a roof rackBeginners on calm lakes and flatwaterTravelers who want a kayak that packs down
Pros
  • Folds into a compact pack for closets and car trunks
  • At 17 lb, light enough to carry alone
  • No roof rack or trailer needed
  • Bundle includes paddle and pump so you can launch right away
  • 9 ft hull tracks reasonably well for a folding boat
Cons
  • Assembly takes several minutes each time
  • Thin folding skin is less durable than a hard plastic hull
  • Not suited to rough water, surf or rocky shorelines
  • Sit-inside cockpit limits easy entry and exit
  • Fewer features than Oru's longer touring models

Questions and answers

Is the Lake Starter Bundle worth it for a beginner?
Yes, if you paddle calm lakes and need something that stores easily. The bundle covers the paddle and pump, so the total cost is lower than buying a kayak and gear separately.
How does it compare with Oru's Inlet or Coast models?
The Lake is shorter and lighter, which makes it easier to pack and carry but slower and less capable in chop. The Inlet and Coast are longer touring designs for open water and longer trips.
How long does it take to assemble?
Most owners get it set up in about 5 to 10 minutes after a few practice runs. First-time assembly takes longer while you learn the folds.
What is included in the bundle?
The bundle pairs the Lake kayak with starter paddling gear such as a paddle and pump. Check the listing for the exact accessory list, since bundle contents can vary.
Can it handle the ocean or rivers?
It is a recreational flatwater kayak, so calm lakes and slow rivers are its limit. It is not designed for surf, whitewater or long open-water crossings.
When is the best time to buy?
Folding kayaks tend to see discounts in late summer and around Black Friday. Compare the current price against its recent range before buying.
What do buyers say about the Oru Kayak Lake Starter Bundle?
Rated 4.2 out of 5 from 30 ratings.
