Our take on the PDP by DW Encore 5-Piece Drum Hardware and Cymbals

The PDP by DW Encore is a full-sized five-piece acoustic kit with poplar shells, a 22x16" bass drum, 12x8" and 10x7" rack toms, a 16x14" floor tom and a 14x5" snare. It ships as a bundle with hardware, brass cymbals and a throne, so a beginner can set up and play without buying extras. Poplar keeps the shells light and affordable, but it is a starter wood, not a step-up one. The best new price is $479.99 at Guitar Center as of November 7, 2026, with three stores selling it new.

Pros

Complete package: shells, hardware, brass cymbals and throne in one box
Full-sized 22" bass drum and 16" floor tom give a real kit feel
Poplar shells are light and easy to move
Standard sizes make heads and replacement parts easy to find
Low entry price for a full acoustic setup

Cons

Stock brass cymbals are the weakest part and most owners upgrade them
Poplar shells lack the projection and tone of birch or maple
Stock heads and hardware are basic; gigging players will replace them
Little room to grow: it is a starter kit, not a long-term kit

What are the shells made of?: Poplar. It is light and affordable but less resonant than birch or maple, which suits practice and small rooms.
How does it compare with a Pearl Roadshow or Ludwig Backbeat?: All three are poplar starter kits at similar prices. The Encore's edge is the full-sized 22" bass drum and the included throne; the others are comparable on hardware and cymbals.
