Our take on the RØDE Podcaster USB Broadcast Microphone

The RØDE Podcaster is a USB dynamic microphone built for podcasting and voice work, with an end-address cardioid capsule and a heavy metal body. It connects straight to a computer over USB with no interface or mixer, and its built-in headphone output lets you monitor while you record. The 40Hz–14kHz response and 115 dB max SPL suit spoken voice more than singing or detailed acoustic instruments. At $169.95 at Adorama as of November 3, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range, with five stores listing it new.

Best forPodcasters and solo voice recorders who want a simple USB setupHome studio users upgrading from a cheap condenser USB micPeople recording in untreated rooms who need tight cardioid rejectionBuyers who want a rugged metal mic that survives travel
Pros
  • Dynamic capsule rejects room noise and keyboard clatter better than most USB condensers
  • Heavy 1.5-pound metal body with an internal shock mount reduces handling noise
  • Built-in headphone jack for zero-latency monitoring
  • Plug-and-play USB, no audio interface needed
  • Cardioid pattern and end-address design work well close-up on speech
Cons
  • 14kHz top end rolls off detail; not ideal for singing or bright acoustic sources
  • Large and heavy at 8.5 inches and 655 g, so it needs a sturdy stand or boom
  • No onboard gain knob or mute button; levels are set in software
  • USB only, no XLR output for use with a mixer later
  • No stand included beyond the USB cable

Questions and answers

Is the RØDE Podcaster worth it at $169.95?
Yes, if you mainly record speech. At $169.95 at Adorama as of November 3, 2026, it is near the bottom of its recent price range, and few USB dynamics match its build and noise rejection at that price.
How does it compare with the RØDE NT-USB?
The Podcaster is a dynamic, end-address mic that rejects room noise and suits close-up speech. The NT-USB is a side-address condenser with more high-end detail, better for music and singing but more sensitive to room sound.
Does it need a stand or boom arm?
Yes. The box includes a USB cable but no stand, and at 655 g and 8.5 inches tall it needs a sturdy desk stand or boom arm. A light tripod will sag.
Can I use headphones with it?
Yes. It has a built-in headphone jack for zero-latency monitoring, and the mic appears as a USB audio device, so you can set levels in your recording software.
Does it work with Mac, Windows and phones?
It is class-compliant USB audio and works on Mac and Windows without drivers. With the right adapter it can work on iPad and some phones, but check your device's USB support first.
When is it cheapest?
It has been listed as low as $169.95 at Adorama as of November 3, 2026. Prices at the other four stores that carry it new tend to sit higher, so watch for holiday sales.
Where is the RØDE Podcaster USB Broadcast Microphone cheapest?
