Our take on the Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB)

The Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB) is a single-board computer built around a quad-core Broadcom ARM Cortex-A76 running at 2.4GHz, paired with 8GB of LPDDR4X memory at 4267 MT/s. It roughly doubles the CPU performance of the Pi 4 and adds a PCIe interface, a power button, an RTC header and dual 4K micro-HDMI outputs. The 8GB model is the one to pick for desktop use, containers or light local AI work. It is widely stocked, so its price sits close to its usual level rather than at a premium.

Pros
  • Quad-core Cortex-A76 at 2.4GHz is a big step up from the Pi 4
  • 8GB of fast LPDDR4X handles multitasking and containers
  • Two micro-HDMI ports drive dual 4K displays
  • PCIe 2.0 lane allows NVMe SSDs via an adapter
  • Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 built in
  • Power button and real-time clock header fix long-standing gaps
Cons
  • Needs a 5V/5A USB-C supply for full performance; lesser supplies throttle it
  • Active cooler is effectively required under sustained load
  • No 3.5mm audio jack; audio goes over HDMI or USB
  • microSD remains the default boot medium unless you add NVMe
  • Full-size HDMI cables won't fit; you need micro-HDMI adapters

What reviewers say

Owners and reviewers consistently rate the Pi 5 as the first Raspberry Pi that feels usable as a general desktop, with the 8GB version singled out for heavy multitasking. The common complaints are heat and power: without the official cooler and a strong supply, it throttles.

Pros
  • Noticeably faster than the Pi 4 in everyday use
  • 8GB model handles browsers and containers well
  • Dual 4K output and PCIe are welcome additions
  • Good software support and community documentation
Cons
  • Runs hot and needs active cooling
  • Demands a 5A supply to avoid throttling
  • Loses the analog audio jack
  • Accessories add up quickly

Questions and answers

Is the 8GB Raspberry Pi 5 worth it over the 4GB?
Yes if you run a desktop, multiple containers or memory-hungry workloads. For a single-purpose server or retro console, the 4GB model saves money with little loss.
What power supply does the Pi 5 need?
Raspberry Pi recommends the official 27W USB-C supply (5V/5A) to unlock full performance and USB current. A weaker charger works but can cause throttling and peripheral dropouts.
Do I need a cooler?
Under sustained load, yes. The official Active Cooler or a case with a fan keeps it from throttling; idle and light tasks run fine passively.
Can I boot from an NVMe SSD?
Yes, with a PCIe-to-M.2 HAT or similar adapter. You need to enable PCIe in the boot configuration, and a 2280 drive needs a case that fits it.
What's in the box?
The board only. You supply the power supply, microSD card, cooler, case, micro-HDMI cables and peripherals.
When is it cheapest?
Prices tend to dip during sales events and bundle promotions. Watch the price history and buy when it falls below its usual level.
