Our take on the REI Co-op Magma 15 Sleeping Bag

The REI Co-op Magma 15 is a mummy-shaped down backpacking bag rated to 15°F, with ISO-tested comfort at 21°F and a lower limit of 9°F. It uses water-resistant down and a recycled ripstop nylon shell, and comes in short and short-wide sizes for broader fit. At $278.93 at REI as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the only new price listed, so there is no cheaper new option to compare against right now.

Pros
  • ISO-tested comfort rating of 21°F and lower limit of 9°F
  • Water-resistant down handles damp nights better than untreated down
  • Short-wide option adds about 7.5 inches of shoulder girth
  • Recycled ripstop shell with bluepass certification
  • Mummy cut saves weight and packs small
Cons
  • Only short lengths listed, so tall sleepers are out
  • Left-side zipper only, which limits pairing with other bags
  • Down needs more care than synthetic fill when wet or washed
  • Single new-price listing leaves little room to shop around

Questions and answers

Is the Magma 15 warm enough for freezing nights?
ISO testing puts comfort at 21°F and the lower limit at 9°F. Most sleepers will be comfortable into the 20s; below that, add a liner or wear a base layer.
What sizes does it come in?
Listings show short and short-wide, both fitting up to 65 inches. The wide version adds about 7.5 inches at the shoulders and 8.5 at the hips.
Is it real down or synthetic?
It is water-resistant down, not synthetic. That makes it lighter and more packable but means it needs to be kept dry and washed with down-specific detergent.
Which side is the zipper on?
The zipper is on the left. That matters if you plan to zip two bags together, since you would need a right-zip bag to pair it with.
Is $278.93 a good price?
It is the only new price listed as of November 4, 2026, so there is no lower new offer to compare. REI house brands often discount during member sales, so waiting for a sale can pay off.
Where is the REI Co-op Magma 15 Sleeping Bag cheapest?
At REI, for $278.93, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the REI Co-op Magma 15 Sleeping Bag?
