Our take on the REI Co-op Magma 30 Sleeping Bag

The REI Co-op Magma 30 is a three-season mummy bag filled with water-resistant 700-fill down and rated to a 30°F comfort limit, with ISO-tested comfort at 34°F and a lower limit of 24°F. It is light and packs small for backpacking, and the treated down holds loft in damp conditions better than untreated down. The best new price is $243.93 at REI as of November 4, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is little price competition to shop around for.

Questions and answers

Is the Magma 30 warm enough for three-season camping?
Yes for most people in mild conditions. ISO comfort is 34°F and the lower limit is 24°F, so pair it with a good pad and layers for nights near freezing.
How does it compare with a synthetic 30°F bag?
The Magma 30 is lighter and packs smaller than most synthetic bags at the same rating. Synthetic bags handle sustained wet better and usually cost less.
What size is it packed?
It is a one-person mummy bag with down insulation, so it compresses into a small stuff sack. Check the listed packed dimensions before buying a compression sack.
Does the water-resistant down need special care?
Wash it with a down-specific cleaner and tumble dry low with dryer balls. Avoid regular detergent, which strips the water-resistant coating.
When is the best time to buy it?
REI discounts sleeping bags most during its member and clearance sales, typically in spring and late summer. At $243.93 as of November 4, 2026, it is listed at full price at the only store selling it new.
Where is the REI Co-op Magma 30 Sleeping Bag cheapest?
At REI, for $243.93, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the REI Co-op Magma 30 Sleeping Bag?
Rated 3.7 out of 5 from 47 ratings.
