Our take on the Retrak Utopia Virtual Reality Headset

The Retrak Utopia is a phone-based virtual reality headset: you slide a smartphone into the front cradle and look through two adjustable lenses. It uses a gyroscope and accelerometer for head tracking, has a built-in action button, Bluetooth audio, and dual adjustable focus so glasses wearers can usually use it without them. At $9.00 at Mercari as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the very bottom of its price range, which is what a basic plastic phone holder should cost.

Questions and answers

Is the Retrak Utopia worth buying?
At $9.00 at Mercari as of November 4, 2026, it is a low-risk way to try phone VR. Do not expect the polish of a standalone headset like a Meta Quest.
Which phones fit the Retrak Utopia?
It takes most Android and iOS smartphones that fit the front cradle, roughly up to 6 inches tall. Very large phones may not slide in.
Do I need a phone with a gyroscope?
Yes. Head tracking relies on the phone's gyroscope and accelerometer, so a phone without them will not track movement.
Can I wear glasses with it?
Usually yes, thanks to the dual adjustable focus, which lets many users go without glasses. Fit varies by face and frame.
Does it have its own battery?
It is rechargeable and comes with a charger, but the screen and most processing come from your phone, so phone battery life is the real limit.
When is it cheapest?
The $9.00 Mercari price as of November 4, 2026 is already near the floor for this type of headset. Watch for used or open-box listings.
