Is the Rogue SM-1 worth it over a power rack?

It depends on your training. The SM-1 gives a guided bar path for solo lifting and takes up less floor space than many racks, but a power rack allows free barbell movement and pull-up bars. Choose the SM-1 if you want Smith machine work; choose a rack if you want free weights.

How much ceiling height does the SM-1 need?

The frame is 73 inches tall, so it fits most garages and basements. Leave extra clearance above the bar for loading plates and for your head during overhead work.

Can I add a pull-up bar to the SM-1?

No. Rogue lists the SM-1 as not compatible with pull-up bars. The keyhole attachment pattern supports other accessories, but not a pull-up bar.

What is the weight capacity of the SM-1?

Rogue rates it at 1000+ lb total. That covers the guided barbell load and is well above what most home lifters will use.

Does the SM-1 come with a barbell and plates?

No. The SM-1 is the frame and guided bar only. You supply the weight plates, and check whether the bar is included or sold separately before ordering.

When is the SM-1 cheapest?

Rogue runs sales around major holidays and Black Friday. Watch the price history on this page to see whether the current price is near its low.

Our take on the Rogue SM-1 Smith Machine

The Rogue SM-1 is a freestanding Smith machine built on 3x3-inch 11-gauge steel uprights with a bolt-together base and triangle plates. It carries a 1000+ lb weight capacity and a 73-inch height, with a 50 x 54-inch footprint. The barbell rides on a guided track with keyhole-pattern attachment points, and rubber feet add stability and protect the floor. It is aimed at small garage gyms and training facilities that want guided barbell work without a full rack.
