Is the Excursion TR17 good for beginners?

Yes, if you run easy dirt paths and want a cheap first trail shoe. Its thin cushioning and modest grip make it less suited to technical terrain.

How does it differ from the TR16?

The TR17 keeps the same neutral trail formula with a 4 mm drop and a mesh upper. Changes between versions are minor, so buy whichever is cheaper.

Most buyers go with their usual running shoe size. If you wear thick socks on trails or have wide feet, the wide width is the safer pick.

No. The mesh upper breathes well but lets water in, and there is no Gore-Tex version.

Yes for short stretches and walks. The lugged outsole is louder and wears faster on pavement than a road shoe.
