Our take on the Shim Rotary tattoo machine Red

The Shim is a corded rotary tattoo machine from Right Stuff Tattoo Machines, built around an aluminum frame and a German-made motor that spins at 6,500 RPM. It runs best at 8 to 10 volts over an RCA cord and handles needles up to a 15 liner or 23 mag. Four plunger bars of different stiffness come in the box so you can tune the give; a grip does not. At $400 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the top of its recent range, with only two stores listing it new.

Questions and answers

Is the Shim rotary worth $400?
It is a fair price for a small-batch aluminum machine with a German motor and four plunger bars. At $400 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, it is at the top of its recent range, so check the other listing before buying.
What stroke length does it have?
Listings disagree: the description says 3.5 mm, while the spec sheet says 4.5 mm with adjustable stroke. Confirm the stroke with the seller before you buy.
Does it come with a grip?
No. The box holds the machine and four plunger bars only. You need to buy a grip separately.
What needles and voltage does it take?
It is rated for needles up to a 15 liner or 23 mag and runs best at 8 to 10 volts over an RCA cord.
Is it good for beginners?
No. Right Stuff positions it for experienced artists, and the tunable plunger bars reward someone who already knows how they like a machine to hit.
When is it cheapest?
Only two stores list it new, so watch both. Prices on small-batch machines like this tend to move little, and the current $400 is near the high end.
Where is the Shim Rotary tattoo machine Red cheapest?
At Painful Pleasures, for $400.00, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Shim Rotary tattoo machine Red?
2 stores we checked sell it, including Painful Pleasures, eBay.
