Is the PS4 Slim worth buying now?

Yes if you want cheap access to the PS4 library and don't need 4K. A PS5 plays most PS4 games better, so pick the Slim only when price is the priority.

Does the PS4 Slim play 4K or 4K Blu-rays?

No. Games output at up to 1080p and the drive reads standard Blu-ray and DVD discs, not 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

How is it different from the original PS4?

The Slim is smaller, lighter and quieter, adds 5GHz Wi-Fi and HDR support, and drops the optical audio port. Performance is essentially the same.

Do I need PlayStation Plus to play online?

Yes, online multiplayer requires a paid PlayStation Plus subscription. Free-to-play games and streaming apps work without it.

What comes in the box?

A PS4 Slim console, one DualShock 4 controller, an HDMI cable, a power cable and a mono headset. Bundles may add a game.

Our take on the Sony PlayStation 4 Slim Console

The PlayStation 4 Slim is Sony's 2016 revision of the PS4, a 1080p game console with a Blu-ray drive, streaming apps and PlayStation Network access. It is smaller and quieter than the original PS4 and adds 5GHz Wi-Fi and HDR support, but it does not play 4K discs or run games at 4K. It is now a budget, last-generation console, so its price sits well below what the PS4 cost at launch and below PS5 pricing.
