Our take on the Sony Vario-Tessar T Fe 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS Camera Lens

The Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS is a full-frame standard zoom for Sony E-mount, co-developed with Zeiss. It covers 24-70mm at a constant f/4 with optical stabilization, a 12-element/10-group design, a 0.2x maximum magnification and a 67mm filter thread, and weighs about 15 oz. It is the compact, lighter alternative to Sony's f/2.8 G Master zoom. The best new price is $619.95 at Newegg as of November 7, 2026, well below its original launch price of around $1,200.

Best forFull-frame E-mount owners who want one walk-around zoomTravel and landscape shooters who value low weightVideo shooters who want OSS and a constant apertureBuyers who want Zeiss rendering without G Master prices

Pros

Constant f/4 across the whole 24-70mm range
Optical SteadyShot helps in low light and handheld video
Compact and light for a full-frame standard zoom at about 15 oz
Zeiss T* coating controls flare and keeps contrast high
Close focus to about 1.3 ft with 0.2x magnification

Cons

f/4 is slow for indoor events and shallow depth of field
Corner sharpness at 24mm and 70mm is softer than the center
Noticeable barrel distortion at 24mm and pincushion at 70mm without correction
Older screw-drive autofocus is slower and louder than newer linear-motor lenses
Plastic barrel feel does not match the Zeiss badge for some owners

Questions and answers

Is the Sony 24-70mm f/4 worth it at $619.95?: At $619.95 at Newegg as of November 7, 2026, it is a reasonable buy for a light full-frame walk-around zoom. At its original price near $1,200 it was hard to justify against the f/2.8 alternatives.
How does it compare with the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM?: The G Master is sharper, focuses faster and gives one more stop of light, but it is much larger, heavier and far more expensive. This lens wins on portability and price.
Does the lens have image stabilization?: Yes. It has built-in Optical SteadyShot, which works on its own and combines with in-body stabilization on newer Sony bodies.
What is the minimum focusing distance?: It focuses down to about 1.3 ft (0.4 m) across the zoom range, with a maximum magnification of 0.2x.
What filter size does it take?: It uses 67mm filters, a common size that keeps filter costs down.
What comes in the box?: The lens ships with front and rear caps, a lens hood and a soft carrying pouch.
Where is the Sony Vario-Tessar T Fe 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS Camera Lens cheapest?: At Newegg, for $619.95, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Sony Vario-Tessar T Fe 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS Camera Lens?: Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 294 ratings.
