Our take on the Synology 1-bay DiskStation DS124 (Diskless)

The Synology DiskStation DS124 is a one-bay network-attached storage box for a single 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA drive, sold without a disk. It runs DiskStation Manager, Synology's full NAS operating system, on a quad-core Realtek RTD1619B at 1.7 GHz with 1 GB of DDR4 and one Gigabit Ethernet port. Its appeal is the software: backups, file sync, media serving, surveillance and Docker-style packages on a small, low-power desktop unit. It is a current entry model, so street pricing tends to sit near its usual level rather than at a deep discount.

Best forA first NAS for one householdCentral backup target for phones and PCsLight file sharing and media streamingLow-power always-on storage
Pros
  • Full DiskStation Manager software, not a stripped-down firmware
  • Quad-core RTD1619B handles file serving and light apps well
  • Small footprint at 6.5 x 2.8 x 8.8 inches and 1.54 lb
  • Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports for external drives or a UPS
  • Wide protocol support: SMB, NFS, AFP, iSCSI, WebDAV
  • Runs quietly and draws little power
Cons
  • One bay: no RAID, so a disk failure means restoring from backup
  • 1 GB RAM is not upgradeable and limits heavy multitasking
  • Single Gigabit Ethernet caps throughput around 110-120 MB/s
  • Diskless, so the drive is an extra cost
  • No M.2 slot or 10GbE; step up to the DS224+ for more

Pros
  • DSM setup is quick and well documented
  • Reliable for backups and file sharing
  • Quiet, compact and low power
  • Good value for a first NAS
Cons
  • 1 GB RAM feels tight with several packages running
  • No redundancy with one drive
  • Gigabit networking limits large transfers

Questions and answers

Is the DS124 worth it over a USB hard drive?
Yes if you want scheduled backups, remote access and shared folders across devices. A plain USB drive is cheaper but only serves the computer it is plugged into.
Does it come with a hard drive?
No. It is diskless; you supply one 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA drive. Budget for the drive on top of the NAS.
Can I upgrade the RAM?
No. The 1 GB of DDR4 is soldered and not user-replaceable, so plan around light use.
How fast is it over the network?
The single Gigabit port tops out around 110-120 MB/s, so a large file copy runs at roughly that speed. Local USB copies are faster.
What is in the box?
The DS124 unit, an external power adapter, an Ethernet cable and quick-start documentation. The drive and mounting screws for 2.5-inch drives are not included.
When is it cheapest?
Entry Synology models see modest discounts around major sales events and when a successor is announced. Watch the price history rather than buying at list.
What do buyers say about the Synology 1-bay DiskStation DS124 (Diskless)?
Rated 4.9 out of 5 from 8 ratings.
Where can I buy the Synology 1-bay DiskStation DS124 (Diskless)?
2 stores we checked sell it, including Walmart, Amazon.
