Is the DS620slim worth it over a 4-bay NAS?

Only if you need six drives in a small space. A 4-bay 3.5-inch NAS usually costs less per terabyte and holds larger drives.

What drives does it take?

It uses 2.5-inch SATA drives, either HDDs or SSDs. 3.5-inch desktop drives will not fit.

Can it handle Plex transcoding?

The Celeron J3355 handles light 1080p transcoding but struggles with 4K. Direct play to clients works better.

The DS620slim, two network cables and a power adapter. Drives are sold separately.

Does it support RAID 6?

Yes. It supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, Basic, Hybrid RAID and JBOD.

How much storage can it hold?

Up to six drives. With 5 TB 2.5-inch drives that is about 30 TB raw, less after RAID redundancy.

Our take on the Synology DiskStation DS620slim 6-Bay NAS Enclosure

The DS620slim is a 6-bay NAS built for 2.5-inch drives, so it fits in a small desktop footprint while holding up to six drives. It runs Synology's DSM software on a 2 GHz Intel Celeron J3355, with RAID 0/1/5/6/10, Basic, Hybrid RAID and JBOD support. Its main trade-off is capacity per drive: 2.5-inch drives top out lower than 3.5-inch ones, so 30 TB total means roughly 5 TB per drive. It is a niche pick for buyers who value size and quiet operation over raw storage ceiling.
