Our take on the ThreadArt Ombre Yarn Big Chunky Yarn Cake

ThreadArt's Ombre Big Chunky Yarn Cake is a 10.6 oz cake of bulky-weight 100% acrylic yarn that shifts through a gradient of shades, here the Flamingo Dance colorway. The single cake is enough for a hat, cowl or small blanket section without joining skeins. At $19.99 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it is the lowest new price among the two stores listing it.

Pros
  • Bulky weight works up quickly on large hooks and needles
  • Ombre shading means fewer color changes to manage
  • One 10.6 oz cake covers a small project
  • Acrylic is machine washable and affordable
  • Single-cake gradient suits scrap-free projects
Cons
  • Acrylic lacks the warmth and drape of wool
  • Chunky yarn can pill and fuzz with wear
  • Only two stores list it, so price competition is thin
  • Gradient repeat depends on the cake, so matching two cakes is hard

Questions and answers

Is this yarn worth it for a beginner?
Yes. Bulky acrylic is forgiving and works up fast on size 10–11 needles or an L–M hook, so a first hat or cowl finishes in an evening.
How much can one 10.6 oz cake make?
Roughly one adult hat and cowl, or a baby blanket section. A full throw usually takes several cakes, and matching the gradient across them is difficult.
Is it machine washable?
Yes. Acrylic is machine washable; use cool water and low heat or air dry to limit pilling and fuzzing.
How does it compare with wool chunky yarn?
It is cheaper and easier to wash, but less warm and less breathable than wool. It also pills more with friction.
What hook or needle size should I use?
A 6.5–8 mm (K–L) hook or US 10–11 needles suits bulky weight. Swatch first, since thickness varies slightly within the cake.
When is the best time to buy it?
Craft-store yarn sales cluster around fall and pre-holiday weeks. At $19.99 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it is the lowest new price of the two stores listing it.
Where is the ThreadArt Ombre Yarn Big Chunky Yarn Cake cheapest?
At Walmart, for $19.99, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the ThreadArt Ombre Yarn Big Chunky Yarn Cake?
Rated 3.9 out of 5 from 9 ratings.
Where can I buy the ThreadArt Ombre Yarn Big Chunky Yarn Cake?
3 stores we checked sell it, including Walmart, eBay, ThreadArt.com.
