Our take on the Trent Austin Design Tryston Farmhouse Bed Frame with Barn Door Headboard

The Tryston is a farmhouse-style platform bed with a sliding barn-door headboard made of manufactured wood. It skips the box spring and holds up to 1000 lb, with a 49.2-inch headboard and 11.8 inches of clearance under the frame. It is a budget-friendly way to get the barn-door look in a queen or king bedroom.

Best forRenters and first-time buyers furnishing a farmhouse bedroomShoppers who want a barn-door headboard without a custom buildCouples who want a platform bed with no box springGuest rooms and primary bedrooms with a rustic or modern-farmhouse theme
Pros
  • No box spring needed; a mattress sits directly on the slats
  • 1000 lb weight capacity is high for a manufactured-wood frame
  • Barn-door headboard gives the farmhouse look at a lower price than solid wood
  • 11.8 inches of under-bed clearance leaves room for storage bins
  • Headboard height of 49.2 inches suits standard mattresses
Cons
  • Manufactured wood and veneer, not solid wood; edges can chip
  • Barn-door hardware and trim arrive as separate pieces and take time to assemble
  • Assembly is a two-person job and hardware can arrive incomplete
  • Heavier than it looks; moving it between rooms is awkward
  • Limited color and size options compared with solid-wood farmhouse beds

Questions and answers

Is the Tryston bed frame worth it?
If you want the barn-door farmhouse look on a budget, it is a reasonable pick. The 1000 lb capacity and no-box-spring design cover the basics. Expect to spend an afternoon on assembly.
Does it need a box spring?
No. The slat platform supports a mattress directly, so you can skip the box spring and save the cost.
What sizes and mattress does it fit?
It is sold in standard sizes such as queen and king and takes a matching mattress. Check the listing for the size you need, since availability varies by size and finish.
How long does assembly take?
Plan on two to three hours with two people. The headboard, barn-door panel and hardware come in separate pieces, and the instructions are the weakest part.
Is the frame solid wood?
No. It is manufactured wood with a veneer finish. That keeps the price down, but edges can chip if bumped.
When is it cheapest?
Farmhouse beds like this tend to drop during fall and holiday furniture sales. Watch the price history for a dip below the recent range before buying.
