Our take on the Ventis HES170 Medium Single Door Wood Burning Fireplace Stove

The Ventis HES170 is a freestanding, pedestal-mounted wood stove with a cast-iron door and a stainless steel heat shield. It puts out up to 65,000 BTU/h and is rated to heat roughly 500 to 1,800 square feet, with a maximum burn time of about 7 hours and 78% optimum efficiency. It is EPA certified and non-catalytic, so it needs no catalyst replacement. The best new price is $2,638.80 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is no recent price range to compare against.

Pros
  • High 65,000 BTU/h maximum output for a medium single-door stove
  • Wide 500–1,800 ft² heating range covers small to mid-size spaces
  • EPA certified with 78% optimum efficiency
  • Non-catalytic design avoids catalyst replacement costs
  • Cast-iron door and stainless steel heat shield
  • Up to 7 hours burn time per load
Cons
  • Only one new listing at $2,638.80, so little price competition
  • No stated firebox size in cubic feet, which matters for log length
  • Pedestal form takes floor space and needs clearance to combustibles
  • Single door means one loading point and a smaller glass view
  • Burn time of 7 hours is modest for overnight heating

Questions and answers

Is the Ventis HES170 worth it?
If you need a non-catalytic EPA-certified stove for up to about 1,800 square feet and want to avoid catalyst replacements, it is a reasonable pick. At $2,638.80 from a single eBay listing as of November 4, 2026, compare against local stove dealers before committing.
How many square feet will it heat?
Ventis rates it for 500 to 1,800 square feet. Real coverage depends on insulation, ceiling height and layout, so treat 1,800 as a best case in an open, well-insulated space.
How long does a load burn?
Ventis lists a maximum burn time of 7 hours. Expect less on low-output shoulder-season burns and plan on reloading before an overnight sleep in cold weather.
Does it need a catalytic converter?
No. It uses non-catalytic combustion technology and is EPA certified without a catalyst, so there is no converter to replace.
What is included with the stove?
The stove ships as a pedestal freestanding unit with a cast-iron door and stainless steel heat shield. Venting, hearth pad and installation hardware are typically sold separately; confirm contents with the seller.
When is the price lowest?
With only one new listing at $2,638.80 as of November 4, 2026, there is no track record of seasonal discounts. Stoves often go on sale in late summer and early fall before heating season, so watch then.
