Our take on the Wayfair Sleep Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper

The Wayfair Sleep Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper is a 3-inch gel-infused memory foam layer meant to soften a too-firm mattress or add pressure relief without buying a new bed. The gel infusion is intended to pull heat away from the body, a common weak point of plain memory foam. It is sold in multiple sizes, with Twin being the entry size. It is a budget-friendly topper rather than a premium one, and shoppers should compare its current price against its usual range before buying.

Best forRenters and dorm users who can't replace the mattressSide sleepers needing pressure relief on a firm bedGuest rooms and short-term softeningBudget shoppers who want memory foam without a full mattress purchase
Pros
  • 3 inches adds noticeable cushioning over a hard mattress
  • Gel infusion helps limit the heat buildup typical of memory foam
  • Memory foam conforms to shoulders and hips for pressure relief
  • Low cost compared with a new mattress or a premium topper
  • Available in several sizes, not just Twin
Cons
  • Memory foam still sleeps warmer than latex or hybrid toppers
  • 3 inches can feel too soft for stomach sleepers or heavy bodies
  • Foam may have a new-chemical smell for the first few days
  • No cover included on the standard version, and it can shift on the bed
  • Shorter lifespan than a mattress; foam can flatten over a year or two

Questions and answers

Is this topper worth it?
For softening a too-firm mattress on a budget, yes. It is not a fix for a sagging or worn-out mattress, and it won't last as long as a new bed.
Will the gel keep me cool?
It helps compared with plain memory foam, but it is still foam. Hot sleepers in warm rooms may want a latex or hybrid topper instead.
How thick is it, and will sheets still fit?
It is 3 inches thick. Most fitted sheets with deep pockets still fit, but tight sheets may need a larger pocket depth.
Does it come with a cover?
The standard version is the foam layer only, with no removable cover. Plan on a mattress protector or topper cover to keep it clean.
Can I cut it to fit?
Memory foam can be cut with a sharp knife, but cutting voids returns. Buy the closest standard size instead if you can.
When is the price lowest?
Wayfair Sleep toppers tend to drop during major sale events and clearance. Check the price history before buying at full price.
