The WD Red Plus 8TB (WD80EFAX) is a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive built for NAS enclosures. It uses conventional magnetic recording (CMR), not shingled, with a 256MB cache, 5400 RPM class spindle and a 180 TB/year workload rating. WD rates it for NAS systems up to 8 bays running 24/7, and it carries a 3-year limited warranty. What reviewers say

Owners of WD Red Plus drives generally report steady, quiet operation in multi-bay NAS units and few failures over years of 24/7 use. The recurring complaints are about price per terabyte and about the confusion caused when WD briefly shipped shingled drives under the Red label, which this CMR model avoids.

Pros
  • Runs cool and quiet in multi-bay enclosures
  • Reliable over long 24/7 service
  • CMR design works well in RAID rebuilds
  • Straightforward drop-in replacement for failed NAS drives
Cons
  • Cost per TB is high compared with larger drives
  • Slower than 7200 RPM drives for large transfers and rebuilds
  • Past SMR confusion in the Red line made buyers wary

Questions and answers

Is the WD80EFAX CMR or SMR?
It is CMR. The WD80EFAX uses conventional magnetic recording, which is what you want for RAID and ZFS rebuilds.
Is this drive worth it at $439.99?
At $439.99 at Amazon as of November 5, 2026, you pay a premium per terabyte for a NAS-rated CMR drive with a 3-year warranty. If you need 8TB specifically for an existing array, it fits; if you are starting fresh, larger Red Plus capacities usually cost less per TB.
How many bays can it go in?
WD rates the Red Plus line for NAS systems up to 8 bays. Larger enclosures call for Red Pro drives.
What is the workload rating?
180 TB per year, which covers typical small-office and home NAS use running around the clock.
Will it work in a desktop PC?
It will connect and run, but it is tuned for NAS use and its 5400 RPM class speed is slower than desktop drives. Use it in a NAS unless you have a specific reason not to.
What is in the box?
The drive itself. Screws and trays are not included, so check whether your NAS enclosure supplies its own caddies.
