Our take on the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-825 Console Digital Piano with Bench

The Clavinova CLP-825 is Yamaha's mid-range console digital piano, with an 88-key GrandTouch-S keyboard, wooden white keys, and CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial piano samples. It adds Grand Expression Modeling and Virtual Resonance Modeling, plus Bluetooth audio and MIDI, three GrandTouch pedals with half-damper, and a 2 x 20 W speaker system. At 45 kg and 135 cm wide it is a furniture piece, not a portable. It sits above the entry CLP-725 and below the CLP-835, which adds a taller cabinet and more powerful amplification.

Best forHome players upgrading from a slab or entry digital pianoClassical players who want a heavier, graded action
Families wanting a furniture-style piano with headphones for quiet practice
Players who want Bluetooth audio streaming and MIDI
Pros
  • GrandTouch-S action with escapement and wooden white keys feels close to an acoustic
  • CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial samples with binaural CFX for headphones
  • Grand Expression Modeling and VRM add realistic response and resonance
  • 256-note polyphony handles layered and pedaled passages without dropouts
  • Bluetooth audio and MIDI for apps, lessons and streaming
  • Three GrandTouch pedals including half-damper
Cons
  • 45 kg and a fixed console design: hard to move once placed
  • Only 2 x 20 W amplification and 8 cm speakers, modest for a large room
  • Binaural sampling limited to the CFX voice
  • No built-in display; voice and setting changes rely on button and key combos
  • Costs noticeably more than the CLP-725 for similar core sounds

  • Good headphone experience with binaural CFX
  • Solid cabinet and pedals that feel like an acoustic
Cons

  • Heavy and awkward to relocate

Questions and answers

Is the CLP-825 worth it over the CLP-725?
The CLP-825 adds GrandTouch-S keys with wooden white keys, Grand Expression Modeling, VRM, Bluetooth and a stronger speaker setup. If touch and resonance matter to you, the step up is worthwhile; if you mainly practice with headphones on a budget, the CLP-725 covers the basics.
How does it compare with the CLP-835?
The CLP-835 has a taller cabinet, a larger speaker system and more amplification, and it adds more voices. The CLP-825 uses the same GrandTouch-S action family and core CFX/Bösendorfer samples, so the main difference is sound projection and cabinet size.
Can I use headphones without disturbing others?
Yes. There is a headphone jack, and the CFX Grand voice uses binaural sampling so it sounds spacious through headphones. A volume limiter protects your hearing at high settings.
Does it work with piano apps and Bluetooth?
Yes. Bluetooth MIDI connects to apps like Yamaha's Smart Pianist for voice and setting control, and Bluetooth audio lets you stream music through the speakers. A wired USB connection is also available for MIDI.
What is included in the box?
The piano comes with its matching bench, a power adapter and the owner's manual. The three pedals are built into the cabinet, so nothing extra is needed to play.
When is the best time to buy?
Clavinova prices tend to dip during holiday sales and when a new CLP generation is announced. Check the price history on this page and compare across stores before buying.
