Is a tow-behind sweeper worth it versus raking?

For large lawns with a riding mower, yes. A 42-inch sweeper covers far more ground per pass than raking and keeps clippings and leaves off the turf. On small lots or without a tow vehicle, a rake or blower makes more sense.

What can tow the Yard Commander sweeper?

It hitches to riding mowers, lawn tractors and ATVs with a standard pin hitch. Check that your machine's hitch height and drawbar match the sweeper's tongue before buying.

How much does the hopper hold?

The hopper is rated at 17.79 cubic feet, roughly a large cartload of leaves or clippings. You empty it by pulling a rope or lever to tip it, so plan a dump spot along your route.

Does it pick up wet leaves?

Poorly. Wet, matted leaves clump and clog the brushes and hopper. Sweep dry material and let wet leaves dry before a pass.

How do I adjust it for my lawn?

Brush height is adjustable so the nylon brushes touch the grass without digging in. Set it lower for short turf and higher for uneven ground, and check the brushes after the first few passes.

When is the price lowest?

Lawn sweepers tend to discount in fall clearance and again in late winter before spring cleanup season. The current $173.99 at eBay as of November 4, 2026 is already near the bottom of the 5-store range.

Our take on the Yard Commander 42-Inch Tow-Behind Sweeper

The Yard Commander is a tow-behind lawn sweeper with a 42-inch working width and a 17.79-cubic-foot hopper, pulled behind a riding mower or ATV to clear leaves, grass clippings and debris from large lawns. It runs on no power of its own: the wheels drive nylon brushes that throw material into the hopper, and brush height adjusts for different surfaces. Never-flat wheels and a 42-inch swath make it a low-maintenance alternative to bagging or raking. At $173.99 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of what 5 stores charge for it new.
