About the Henckels J.A. Stainless Steel 14-Pc. Self-Sharpening Knife Block Set

The Henckels J.A. 14-piece set is a stamped stainless steel knife block with self-sharpening slots, so the fine-edge knives get honed each time you pull them out or put them back. It covers the basics: 8-inch chef's knife, santoku, bread knife, utility, paring, steak knives, shears and a 13-slot walnut or black block. Blades are single-piece stamped with full tangs and triple-rivet handles, which keeps the price low but skips the heft of forged knives. At $98.96 at Macy's as of November 6, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range, well under the $150-plus these sets often list at.

  • Stamped full-tang blades with triple-rivet handles at a low price
  • Block holds 13 slots, so most knives have a home

  • Block takes real counter space
  • Some owners report uneven edges or loose rivets out of the box

What reviewers say

  • 3.5 / 5113 ratings

Ratings average 3.5 out of 5 from 113 buyers. People like the convenience of the self-sharpening block and the range of knives for the money, but some report dull edges, wobbly handles or a block that arrived damaged.

What people mention
  • SharpnessMixedBuyers say the self-sharpening slots keep knives usable, but some find edges dull sooner than expected.
  • BuildMixedStamped blades and triple-rivet handles feel fine for the price, though a few owners report loose rivets or light-feeling knives.
  • ValuePraisedReviewers call it a lot of knives for the money and a good starter or gift set.
  • BlockMixedThe 13-slot block is handy, but some say it takes up counter space or arrived damaged.
  • Serrated knivesCriticisedThe bread and steak knives can't go through the sharpening slots, so they dull with no fix in the set.

Questions and answers

Is $98.96 a good price for this set?
Yes. At $98.96 at Macy's as of November 6, 2026, it is near the bottom of its recent range, and these sets often list above $150.
Do the self-sharpening slots really work?
They hone the fine-edge knives each time you insert or remove them, which keeps them serviceable. They do not restore a badly dulled edge, and serrated knives should not use them.
Can I put these knives in the dishwasher?
They are listed as dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended to protect the edges and handles.
What knives are included?
An 8-inch chef's knife, santoku, bread knife, utility knife, paring knife, steak knives, kitchen shears and a 13-slot self-sharpening block.
How does this compare to forged Henckels knives?
These are stamped, so they are lighter and cheaper than Henckels' forged lines. Forged knives hold an edge longer and feel heavier, but cost much more.
When is this set cheapest?
Knife block sets usually drop around Black Friday, holiday sales and wedding-season promotions. Track the price history here to catch a dip.
