Our take on the Apple iPad 9th Generation (10.2-inch, 2021)

The iPad 9th Generation is Apple's budget tablet, released in 2021 with a 10.2-inch Retina display, an A13 Bionic chip and 64GB or 256GB of storage. It keeps the headphone jack and Home button that later iPads dropped, and it runs iPadOS with access to the full App Store. The best new price is $156.18 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, well below what this model sold for at launch and near the low end of its recent range.

Questions and answers

Is the iPad 9th Generation still worth buying in 2026?
Yes if you want a cheap Apple tablet for streaming, browsing, notes and video calls. It is slower and older-looking than the iPad 10th or 11th generation, but it costs far less.
How does it compare to the iPad 10th Generation?
The 10th gen has a larger 10.9-inch screen, a faster A14 chip, USB-C and a better camera. The 9th gen keeps the headphone jack and Home button and is the cheaper pick.
Does the Apple Pencil work with it?
Yes, but only the first-generation Apple Pencil, which charges through the Lightning port. The Apple Pencil 2 and USB-C Pencil do not work with this model.
Is 64GB enough?
For streaming, browsing and light schoolwork, yes. If you download games, shoot lots of video or keep large offline libraries, pay more for the 256GB model.
What is in the box?
The iPad, a Lightning to USB-C cable and a 20W USB-C power adapter. No headphones or Apple Pencil are included.
When is it cheapest?
Budget iPads drop around Black Friday, back-to-school season and when a new model launches. The current $156.18 at Walmart is already near the floor for this model.
Where is the Apple iPad 9th Generation (10.2-inch, 2021) cheapest?
At Walmart, for $156.18, 48% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Apple iPad 9th Generation (10.2-inch, 2021)?
