Is the iPad 9th generation still worth buying in 2026?

Yes if you want a cheap Apple tablet for streaming, browsing, notes and light games. It will not get the newest iPadOS features that need newer chips, so check that your must-have apps still support it.

How does it compare with the iPad 10th generation?

The 10th generation has a larger 10.9-inch screen, USB-C, a newer chip and a better front camera. The 9th generation costs less and keeps the headphone jack and Home button.

Does the Apple Pencil 1 work with it?

Yes. It pairs and charges by plugging into the Lightning port, which works but is clumsy. The USB-C Apple Pencil and Pencil 2 do not work with this iPad.

For most people, yes. It holds a large offline video library, photo collections and many apps. If you mostly stream and store files in the cloud, 64 GB would do, but 256 GB avoids juggling storage.

The iPad, a USB-C to Lightning cable and a 20W USB-C power adapter. No Pencil, keyboard or case is included.

Entry-level iPads usually drop during back-to-school season and Black Friday. The current $304.99 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026 is already well under launch pricing for the 256 GB model.

Our take on the Apple iPad (9th Generation) A2602 256 GB, Wi-Fi, 10.2 in - Silver

The iPad 9th generation is Apple's entry-level tablet, with a 10.2-inch Retina display, an A13 Bionic chip and 256 GB of storage in this configuration. It keeps the Home button with Touch ID and a headphone jack, and works with the first-generation Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. The 256 GB model is the roomiest version of a tablet Apple has since replaced with newer base iPads. At $304.99 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it sits well below what this capacity cost new at launch.
