Chemi-Pure is a resin-and-carbon filter media sold in a 10-oz jar for freshwater aquariums. It is placed in a filter or canister to remove dissolved organics, odors, discoloration and some heavy metals, and it is one of the longest-running chemical media brands in the hobby. The best new price is $11.88 at Chewy.com as of November 4, 2026, and only two stores list it new, so comparison shopping is quick.

Questions and answers

Is Chemi-Pure worth it for a freshwater tank?
It is worth it if you want clearer water and less odor and already have biological filtration in place. It is not a substitute for a cycled filter or regular water changes.
How long does a jar last?
One 10-oz jar is a single charge for most small and mid-size filters. Replace it roughly every four to six weeks, or sooner if water clarity drops.
Does it affect pH or hardness?
The ion-exchange resin can raise pH and hardness in soft water. Test your water after adding it, especially for fish that need soft, acidic conditions.
Can I use it in saltwater or a reef tank?
Boyd lists this jar for freshwater use. For marine tanks, look for the saltwater version of Chemi-Pure rather than this one.
What is in the jar?
The jar holds the resin-carbon media blend in a filter bag. Rinse it before use and place it where water flows through it.
When is it cheapest?
The best new price is $11.88 at Chewy.com as of November 4, 2026. With only two stores listing it, check both before buying.
Where is the Boyd Chemi-Pure Filter Media, 10-oz jar cheapest?
