Our take on the Boyd Chemi-Pure Grande Filter Media 40-oz Bottle

Boyd Chemi-Pure Grande is a 40-oz bottle of mixed filter media for freshwater aquariums. It combines activated carbon with ion-exchange resins to pull out dissolved organics, discoloration, odors and some heavy metals. It is a drop-in chemical layer for canister and sump filters, not a biological or mechanical filter. The best new price is $39.95 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, with two stores listing it new.

Pros
  • Carbon and ion-exchange resin in one pouch
  • Targets discoloration, odor and dissolved organics

  • 40-oz bottle lasts through several media changes
  • Widely used in the hobby for years
Cons
  • Resin exhausts faster than carbon alone in hard water
  • Not a substitute for biological filtration
  • Pouch media can leach phosphate if left too long
  • No cartridge or bag included in every listing

  • Reduces tank smell
  • Easy to add to existing filter trays
Cons
  • Effect fades faster than expected
  • Can raise phosphate in some tanks
  • Price per ounce is high versus plain carbon

Questions and answers

Is Chemi-Pure Grande worth it over plain activated carbon?
Yes if you want ion exchange along with carbon to fight color and odor. Plain carbon is cheaper but does less for dissolved organics.
How long does one pouch last?
Most keepers replace it every 4 to 6 weeks. In hard water or heavily stocked tanks, change it sooner.
Does it work in saltwater tanks?
It is sold for freshwater use. Saltwater keepers usually pick the original Chemi-Pure or Chemi-Pure Blue instead.
What is in the 40-oz bottle?
It holds loose media mix meant to be bagged or placed in a filter tray. Check the listing for whether a media bag is included.
When is the price lowest?
Chemical media prices move little. The $39.95 eBay price as of November 4, 2026 is near the low end for the 40-oz size.
Where is the Boyd Chemi-Pure Grande Filter Media 40-oz Bottle cheapest?
At Chewy.com, for $46.99, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Boyd Chemi-Pure Grande Filter Media 40-oz Bottle?
