Our take on the Boyd Chemi-Pure Green Ultimate Filter Media 11-oz Jar

Chemi-Pure Green is a granular filter media for freshwater aquariums, sold in an 11-oz jar. It combines activated carbon with ion-exchange resins to clear discoloration and pull dissolved organics from the water. It is a drop-in media for canister and hang-on filters, not a biological filter. The best new price is $20.58 at Chewy.com as of November 4, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is no cheaper alternative to compare against.

Best forFreshwater community and tropical tanksTanks with tannin-stained or yellowing waterCanister and hang-on filter ownersKeepers who want carbon plus resin in one bag
Pros
  • Clears yellow tint and haze from freshwater tanks
  • Carbon and ion-exchange resin in one media
  • 11-oz jar is enough for several media changes
  • Simple to add to most canister or power filters
  • Works alongside existing biological media
Cons
  • Resin capacity is spent in roughly 4 to 6 weeks
  • Not for saltwater or reef tanks
  • Only one store lists it new, so price competition is thin
  • Loose granules need a media bag or cartridge
  • Does not replace biological filtration

What reviewers say

Owners of freshwater tanks generally report clearer water within days, especially in tanks stained by driftwood. The common complaint is that it exhausts faster than expected and needs replacing monthly.

Pros
  • Visible clearing of yellow water
  • Easy to rinse and load into a filter
  • No effect on fish or shrimp in most reports
Cons
  • Loses effectiveness after about a month
  • Granules can escape if not bagged well
  • Cost adds up with frequent changes

Questions and answers

Is Chemi-Pure Green worth it over plain activated carbon?
If your water is yellow from tannins or has lingering odors, the added resin does more than carbon alone. For a tank that is already clear, plain carbon is cheaper.
How long does one jar last?
The 11-oz jar holds enough for several changes in a small to mid-size filter. Plan to replace the media every 4 to 6 weeks, so one jar covers a few months in a single tank.
Can I use it in a saltwater or reef tank?
No. This version is made for freshwater. Use the original Chemi-Pure or Chemi-Pure Elite for saltwater setups.
Does it remove medication from the tank?
Yes. Carbon media absorbs many aquarium medications, so remove it during treatment and put it back after water changes.
What is in the jar?
Loose granular media only. You supply a media bag or cartridge to hold it inside the filter.
When is the price lowest?
With only one store listing it new at $20.58 as of November 4, 2026, there is no competing price to wait for. Watch for site-wide sales at that store.
Where is the Boyd Chemi-Pure Green Ultimate Filter Media 11-oz Jar cheapest?
At Chewy.com, for $20.58, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Boyd Chemi-Pure Green Ultimate Filter Media 11-oz Jar?
2 stores we checked sell it, including Chewy.com, eBay.
