Our take on the Boyd Chemi-Pure Green Ultimate Filter Media, 5-oz jar

Boyd Chemi-Pure Green is a 5-oz jar of filter media for freshwater aquariums. It combines activated carbon with ion-exchange resins to pull out dissolved organics, tannins and odors that cloud water and tint it yellow. It is a drop-in media for canister and hang-on-back filters, not a biological filter, so it does not replace your existing bio media. The best new price is $16.07 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so there is little price competition to shop around.

Best forFreshwater tanks with yellow or cloudy waterTanks with driftwood or botanicals that leach tanninsOwners of canister or hang-on-back filtersKeeping water clear between water changes
Pros
  • Targets dissolved organics, tannins and odors, not just particles
  • Works in most canister and hang-on-back filter media baskets
  • Small 5-oz jar suits nano and small tanks
  • Does not remove trace minerals the way plain carbon can over time
  • Simple drop-in use with no dosing or setup
Cons
  • Only one store lists it new, so price comparison is thin
  • 5 oz is small; larger tanks need several jars
  • Resin capacity depletes and needs regular replacement
  • Not a substitute for biological filtration or water changes
  • No published exhaustion indicator, so replacement is guesswork

Questions and answers

Is Chemi-Pure Green worth it over plain activated carbon?
It adds ion-exchange resin to carbon, so it also targets dissolved organics and yellowing that plain carbon leaves behind. If your water is already clear, plain carbon is cheaper. If you fight tannin tint or odor, the extra resin is the point.
How much media do I need for my tank?
One 5-oz jar is aimed at small tanks and nano setups. For larger tanks, plan on multiple jars or a larger size, and match the amount to your filter's media basket.
How often should I replace it?
Most users swap it every four to six weeks, or sooner if yellowing returns. Heavy tannin loads exhaust it faster.
Will it remove medications or fertilizers?
Yes. Like carbon, it adsorbs many medications and liquid fertilizers, so remove it during treatment and dose fertilizers after it is spent or pulled.
Does it work in saltwater or reef tanks?
Boyd lists this version for freshwater use. For marine tanks, use the original Chemi-Pure or Chemi-Pure Blue instead.
When is the price lowest?
With only one new listing at $16.07 on eBay as of November 4, 2026, there is no real price spread to time. Watch for multi-packs, which often cost less per jar.
Where is the Boyd Chemi-Pure Green Ultimate Filter Media, 5-oz jar cheapest?
At Chewy.com, for $11.80, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Boyd Chemi-Pure Green Ultimate Filter Media, 5-oz jar?
