Is the Craftsman Z5400 worth it at $989.99?

At $989.99 at Cool Gas Depot as of November 4, 2026, it is one of the cheapest ways to get a 46-inch zero-turn with a 22 HP Kohler engine. If you mow up to 2 acres of mostly flat lawn and want a bagger included, it is a strong value.

How does the Z5400 compare with a lawn tractor?

It steers with lap bars and turns on the spot, so it trims around trees and beds much faster than a lawn tractor. The trade-off is a stiffer ride and a higher learning curve for new zero-turn drivers.

Can I mulch or bag with it?

It side-discharges by default and a bagger is included. Mulching requires an optional mulch kit, which is not in the box.

How much lawn can it handle?

Craftsman rates it for up to 2 acres. The 46-inch deck and 22 HP engine keep mowing time reasonable on that size, though hilly or wet ground slows it down.

What should I check before buying?

Confirm your gate and storage opening clear the 52-inch width, and that you can handle a 710 lb machine on a trailer. Also check that local service for Kohler engines is available near you.

Zero-turn mowers usually drop in price in late fall and winter, outside mowing season. The current $989.99 at Cool Gas Depot is already low for this class, so watch for clearance events rather than waiting for spring.
