Our take on the Troy-Bilt Mustang 42 in. 547 cc Gas Zero-Turn Mower

The Troy-Bilt Mustang 42 is a gas zero-turn mower with a 42-inch stamped deck and a 547 cc (22 hp) Troy-Bilt engine. It uses dual lap-bar steering and dual hydrostatic transmissions, and Troy-Bilt rates it for up to 4 acres. At $3,048 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the top of its recent price range, so waiting for a seasonal markdown is reasonable.

Questions and answers

Is the Troy-Bilt Mustang 42 worth it?
For one to three acres of mostly open lawn, yes. It mows much faster than a lawn tractor at a lower price than commercial zero-turns. If your yard is rough or heavily landscaped, a lawn tractor or a mower with a suspension seat may suit you better.
How does it compare with the Mustang 54?
The Mustang 54 has a wider 54-inch deck and a larger engine, so it covers more ground per pass. The 42-inch version costs less and fits through narrower gates, which matters on smaller or fenced lots.
What size yard is the 42-inch deck good for?
Troy-Bilt rates it for up to 4 acres, but most owners are happiest on 1 to 3 acres. A 42-inch deck means more passes than a 54-inch, so very large open lawns take longer.
Does it fit through a standard gate?
The 42-inch deck is the main reason buyers pick this model. It fits through most 4-foot gates, though you should measure your gate and check the mower's actual width before buying.
When is the price lowest?
Zero-turn mowers usually drop in late fall and winter, outside mowing season. At $3,048 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it is at the high end of its range, so a spring or fall sale is worth watching.
Where is the Troy-Bilt Mustang 42 in. 547 cc Gas Zero-Turn Mower cheapest?
At Walmart, for $3,048.00, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Troy-Bilt Mustang 42 in. 547 cc Gas Zero-Turn Mower?

Where can I buy the Troy-Bilt Mustang 42 in. 547 cc Gas Zero-Turn Mower?
10 stores we checked sell it, including Walmart, Home Depot, Omni Outdoor Living, eBay, DK Hardware.
