Is 5 kW enough for a van or garage?

5 kW is the listed maximum, and real output is usually lower. It is plenty for a van or single garage in mild weather; in hard freezing you may need to run it high constantly.

What else do I need to install it?

You need a diesel tank, fuel line, exhaust pipe routed outside, combustion-air intake, a 12V power source and fusing. Many kits include the pump and controller but not a tank or mounting plate.

Can it run on a 12V battery?

Yes. It draws about 20 amps at startup on glow plug, then a few amps once running, so a leisure battery with a charger or a vehicle alternator works.

Is it safe to use indoors?

Only with the exhaust and intake vented outdoors. The combustion chamber is sealed, but a badly fitted exhaust can leak carbon monoxide, so fit a CO alarm.

Our take on the Diesel Heater 12V 2KW-5KW Portable Diesel Air Heater Kit

A Chinese-made 12V diesel air heater kit: a combustion chamber, blower, fuel pump, controller with thermostat and timer, remote, and ducting, sold as a parking-heater kit for vans, boats, garages and workshops. It runs on diesel from a small tank and vents exhaust outside through a pipe, so it heats without an open flame indoors. Output is listed as 5 kW, which is far more than the 10 square feet in the listing suggests; realistically it suits a van, small cabin or single garage. At $64 at eBay as of November 5, 2026, it sits at the low end of what these kits sell for, well under the $100-$200 typical for branded 5 kW units.
