Is the iPad 9th Gen still worth buying in 2026?

For basic use it still works well, but at $464.26 new it is hard to justify. A refurbished or discounted unit, or a newer iPad, makes more sense at that price.

How does it compare with the iPad 10th Gen?

The 10th Gen has a larger 10.9-inch screen, USB-C, a better front camera and a newer chip. The 9th Gen keeps the home button, headphone jack and lower price.

For streaming, browsing and a few apps, yes. If you download movies, games or lots of photos, look for the 256GB version or use cloud storage.

Does it work with the Apple Pencil?

It supports the first-generation Apple Pencil, which charges through the Lightning port. The USB-C Apple Pencil and the second-generation Pencil do not work with it.

This listing includes only the iPad itself. A charger, cable and Apple Pencil are not included, so budget for those separately.

Entry-level iPads usually drop around Black Friday and back-to-school sales, and refurbished units cost less year-round. The current new price is above typical sale levels.

Our take on the Factory Unlocked Apple iPad 9th Gen 64GB Space Gray MK663LL/A

The iPad 9th Gen (2021) is Apple's entry-level tablet: a 10.2-inch 2160 x 1620 Retina display, A13 Bionic chip, 8MP rear camera, 64GB storage and iPadOS, with a headphone jack and a Lightning port. It is the last iPad with a home button and Touch ID, which makes it the cheapest new way into iPadOS. The only new price listed is $464.26 at Amazon as of November 4, 2026, which is high for a 64GB base model that has been discounted well below that in the past.
