Our take on the Fanxiang SATA 2.5" Internal Solid State Drive

The Fanxiang SATA 2.5" SSD is a budget 2.5-inch internal drive for laptops, desktops and older machines that still use a SATA bay. It comes in 256 GB, 512 GB, 2 TB and 4 TB versions and connects over standard SATA at up to roughly 550 MB/s, so it is a drop-in replacement for a hard drive rather than a speed upgrade over other SATA SSDs. It is rated 4.7 out of 5 from 53 ratings. No current price was supplied for this page, so check the live comparison for the latest figure against its recent range.

Pros
  • Standard 2.5-inch SATA fit works in most laptops and desktops
  • Four capacities from 256 GB to 4 TB
  • Much faster than any spinning hard drive
  • Simple plug-and-play upgrade, no adapter needed
Cons
  • SATA speeds cap around 550 MB/s, well below NVMe drives
  • No DRAM or controller details published, so sustained performance is uncertain
  • Large 2 TB and 4 TB versions cost more per gigabyte than small ones
  • Fanxiang is a lesser-known brand with limited long-term track record

Questions and answers

Is this SSD worth it over a hard drive?
Yes, if your machine still has a spinning drive. A SATA SSD cuts boot and app load times sharply for a modest price.
Should I buy this or an NVMe drive?
Buy NVMe if your motherboard has an M.2 slot, since it is several times faster. Choose this only when SATA is your only option.
What are the read and write speeds?
SATA tops out around 550 MB/s, and this drive is in that class. Expect slower sustained writes on very large files.
Will it fit my laptop?
It fits any laptop with a standard 2.5-inch SATA bay. Thin laptops that use only M.2 slots will not take it.
What comes in the box?
The drive itself. You supply the SATA cable and, for desktops, the power cable and mounting screws.
When is it cheapest?
Budget SSDs like this one tend to dip during major sales events. Check the price history chart before buying.
What do buyers say about the Fanxiang SATA 2.5" Internal Solid State Drive?
