Our take on the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar GPS Bike Computer

The Garmin Edge 1040 Solar is Garmin's top-tier GPS bike computer, with a 3.5-inch color touchscreen, full routable maps, a barometric altimeter and ANT+, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Its headline feature is solar charging, which extends battery life well beyond the rated 45 hours in sunny conditions. At $519 at Walmart as of November 3, 2026, it sits near the top of its recent price range, so it is a premium buy rather than a bargain.

Questions and answers

Is the Edge 1040 Solar worth it over the standard Edge 1040?
The Solar adds a solar panel that extends battery life in sunlight, which matters most on multi-day rides. If you rarely ride long days, the standard 1040 gives the same screen and features for less.
How long does the battery really last?
Garmin rates it at up to 45 hours, and solar charging can push that higher in strong sun. Real-world life drops with heavy map use, backlight and sensor load.
Does it work with my power meter and heart rate strap?
Yes. It supports ANT+ and Bluetooth sensors, including power meters, heart rate straps, speed and cadence sensors.
Can I load routes and maps from other apps?
Yes. It supports GPX route files and syncing through Garmin Connect, and it has full onboard maps for navigation without a phone signal.
What is in the box?
The unit comes with out-front and standard mounts, a charging cable and documentation. Sensors such as heart rate and speed are not included unless a bundle is specified.
When is it cheapest?
Prices on this model move around major sales events and when a successor launches. At $519 at Walmart as of November 3, 2026, it is near the top of its recent range, so waiting for a sale is reasonable.
Where is the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar GPS Bike Computer cheapest?
At Walmart, for $519.00, 26% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
