Is the GP6500 worth it over a smaller generator?

If you need to run a furnace, well pump or 240V tools, the 6,500 running watts are worth it. For lights and a fridge only, a smaller, lighter unit will cost less and be easier to move.

Can it power a house during an outage?

It can run essential circuits through a transfer switch, not a whole house at once. Add up the running watts of what you need and keep the total under 6,500, allowing extra for motor startup.

How long does it run on a full tank?

About 10.5 to 11.5 hours at 50% load on the 7.9-gallon tank. Heavier loads shorten that, so plan on refueling every workday or outage night.

Does it have electric start?

No. The GP6500 is recoil-start only. If pull-starting is a problem, look at Generac models with electric start.

Is it safe for sensitive electronics?

It is a conventional generator, not an inverter, so power is not clean enough for computers and TVs without a surge protector or UPS. Use it for appliances, tools and lights.

Our take on the Generac 7690 GP6500 Portable Generator

The Generac GP6500 is a gasoline portable generator with 6,500 running watts and 8,125 starting watts, enough to back up a home's essentials or run power tools and a welder off 120/240V outlets. Its 389cc OHV engine and 7.9-gallon steel tank give roughly 10.5 to 11.5 hours of run time at half load, and PowerRush starting capacity helps it handle motor loads. It is a recoil-start, 172-pound unit on never-flat wheels with a fold-down handle. The best new price is $849.00 at Amazon as of November 4, 2026, with 4 stores selling it new.
