Our take on the Hatchbox PETG

Hatchbox PETG is a 1.75 mm PETG filament sold on a 1 kg spool, aimed at FDM printers that want more toughness and heat resistance than PLA. It prints between 230°C and 260°C and is held to +/- 0.03 mm diameter tolerance, which suits detailed parts and functional prints. Hatchbox lists it as odorless and low on moisture uptake, with no heated bed required. It is a mid-priced everyday filament rather than a specialty engineering material.

Brackets, jigs and mechanical prototypes
Pros
  • Tough and slightly flexible, so parts resist cracking better than PLA
  • Higher heat tolerance than PLA for parts left in a car or warm room
  • 230–260°C range gives room to tune layer adhesion
  • +/- 0.03 mm diameter tolerance keeps extrusion consistent
  • Odorless while printing, so it works in a shared room
  • No heated bed strictly required
Cons
  • Stringing and oozing are common and need retraction tuning
  • Prints stick too well to bare glass and can tear the surface
  • Needs slower speeds than PLA on detailed parts
  • 1 kg spool limits large multi-part jobs
  • Not a high-temperature engineering plastic like ABS or ASA

What reviewers say

Hatchbox PETG has a long track record with hobbyist printers and is generally seen as a reliable, consistent spool for the price. Owners like the strength and surface finish but warn that it strings and bonds aggressively to beds until settings are dialed in.

Pros
  • Consistent diameter and predictable extrusion
  • Strong, durable finished parts
  • Good layer adhesion once temperature is tuned
  • Widely available and reasonably priced
Cons
  • Heavy stringing out of the box
  • Can fuse to glass beds and damage them
  • Occasional tangled or unevenly wound spools
  • Needs slower print speeds than PLA

Questions and answers

Is Hatchbox PETG worth it over PLA?
Yes if the part needs to survive drops, flex or mild heat. PLA is easier to print and stiffer, so stay with PLA for display models and simple prototypes.
What temperature should I print it at?
Start at 240°C nozzle and a bed around 70–80°C, then adjust within the 230–260°C range. Lower temperatures reduce stringing; higher ones improve layer bonding.
Does it need a heated bed?
Hatchbox says no heated bed is required, but a bed at 70–80°C with glue stick or PEI improves first-layer adhesion and reduces warping.
Why is my PETG stringing so much?
PETG oozes easily. Increase retraction distance slightly, lower nozzle temperature toward 230–235°C, and enable travel moves to cut strings.
What is on the spool and how much filament do I get?
One 1 kg spool of 1.75 mm PETG with a desiccant pack. The spool has an 8-inch diameter and fits standard spool holders.
When is it cheapest?
Multi-packs and color closeouts tend to be the lowest price per spool. Single spools rarely discount much, so compare price per kilogram across stores.
