Our take on the Husqvarna Z454 54" Zero Turn Mower with 522L Trimmer

The Husqvarna Z454 is a residential zero-turn mower with a 54-inch fabricated 10-gauge deck, a 22 hp Kawasaki V-twin and Parker HTE10 hydrostatic drives good for up to 10 mph. It comes bundled with a 522L string trimmer. The 54-inch cut and 6-gallon tank suit large lawns, but the 2.3-out-of-5 owner rating from 23 ratings is a warning sign worth weighing before you buy.

Best forOwners of one acre or more of open lawnBuyers who want a fast 10 mph zero-turn at a mid-range priceShoppers who also need a string trimmer in the same purchaseMowing around trees and beds where a tight turn radius helps
Pros
  • 54-inch fabricated 10-gauge deck takes rough ground better than stamped decks
  • 22 hp Kawasaki V-twin with oil filter and dual-element air filter is a proven engine layout
  • Parker HTE10 hydrostatic drives are serviceable commercial-style units
  • Up to 10 mph forward speed cuts mowing time on big lots
  • 13 cutting positions from 1.5 to 4.5 inches cover most lawn heights
  • Greaseable aluminum spindles can be maintained rather than replaced
Cons
  • Owner rating is low at 2.3 out of 5 from 23 ratings
  • 54-inch deck needs a wide gate and storage space; not for small lots
  • No suspension seat or deck, so ride is firm on uneven ground
  • 6-gallon tank means refueling on very large properties
  • Bundled 522L trimmer adds cost even if you already own one

Questions and answers

Is the Husqvarna Z454 worth it?
It depends on your lawn size and tolerance for risk. The Kawasaki engine and fabricated deck are solid hardware, but the 2.3-out-of-5 owner rating means you should check dealer support and warranty terms before buying.
How does the Z454 compare with the MZ54?
The Z454 uses Parker HTE10 hydrostatic drives and a 10-gauge fabricated deck, steps up from the lighter MZ series. It is the heavier-duty choice for larger lots.
How big a lawn can it handle?
The 54-inch deck and 10 mph top speed suit two to four acres comfortably. The 6-gallon tank covers most of that in one fill.
What comes in the box?
You get the Z454 mower and a Husqvarna 522L string trimmer. Check with the seller on assembly and delivery terms, since zero-turns usually ship crated.
Does it fit through a standard gate?
No. The 54-inch deck plus rear tires at 22 x 10-10 need a gate wider than about 60 inches. Measure before you buy.
When is it cheapest?
Zero-turn prices usually drop in late fall and winter, outside mowing season. Watch price history rather than buying at spring peak.
What do buyers say about the Husqvarna Z454 54" Zero Turn Mower with 522L Trimmer?
Rated 2.3 out of 5 from 23 ratings.
