Our take on the IKEA BILLY Bookcase

The BILLY is IKEA's standard open bookcase: 31 1/2 inches wide, 11 inches deep and 41 3/4 inches tall, with two adjustable shelves plus the fixed base shelf. Each shelf holds up to 66 lb, enough for hardcovers or a row of binders. It ships flat in one 50 lb box and needs assembly. At $58.99 at eBay as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of its usual range, where it typically runs from about $50 to $80 depending on finish and store.

Pros
  • Cheap per linear foot of shelving
  • Two adjustable shelves let you fit tall books
  • 66 lb per shelf handles dense rows of hardcovers
  • Huge finish range and add-on doors and extensions
  • Replacement parts and extra shelves are easy to buy
Cons
  • Particleboard with a thin veneer; edges chip and water rings easily
  • Must be anchored to the wall; it tips if loaded and pulled
  • Assembly takes most people 30 to 60 minutes
  • Back panel is thin and can bow or rattle
  • 11-inch depth is shallow for oversized art books

Questions and answers

Is $58.99 a good price for the BILLY?
Yes. That is at the low end of what this 31 1/2-inch BILLY usually sells for, which is roughly $50 to $80 depending on finish and seller. Check the finish and whether shipping is included before buying at eBay.
How much weight can each shelf hold?
IKEA rates each shelf at 66 lb. Spread heavy hardcovers across the shelf rather than stacking them in one spot, and put the heaviest items on the bottom.
Do I need to attach it to the wall?
Yes. IKEA includes a wall-anchoring kit and recommends using it. A tall, light bookcase loaded with books can tip if someone pulls on it or climbs it.
Can I add doors or make it taller?
Yes. IKEA sells compatible BILLY doors, extra shelves and height extension units for this width. Buy them with the bookcase so the finish matches.
What is in the box?
One flat package with the frame, shelves, back panel, shelf pins, wall-anchoring hardware and instructions. Tools, a screwdriver and a hammer are not included.
When is it cheapest?
IKEA discounts BILLY least often, so the best savings usually come from buying used or from a reseller running a promotion. Watch the price across stores rather than waiting for a set sale date.
Where is the IKEA BILLY Bookcase cheapest?
At Amazon, for $324.99, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the IKEA BILLY Bookcase?
2 stores we checked sell it, including Amazon, eBay.
