Is the 14.5-inch Lava Lamp worth it?

At $34.95 at Coolest Toys On Earth as of November 5, 2026, it is a fair price for the classic size. Buy it for the look and the motion, not for useful lighting.

How long does it take to start flowing?

Expect 1 to 2 hours for the wax to soften and start moving. A cold room slows it down, so keep it away from drafts.

What bulb does it use?

A 25-watt incandescent bulb, which is included. Use the same wattage when replacing it; a higher-watt bulb can overheat the globe.

Can I leave it on all night?

Lava recommends against running it for more than 8 to 10 hours at a time. Turn it off with the switch when you sleep.

No. It is labeled for ages 14 and up, and the glass globe and warm bulb make it unsuitable for young children.

How do I fix cloudy liquid?

Let the lamp run through several heat cycles over a few days. The cloudiness usually settles as the wax recombines.

Our take on the Lava Lamp 14.5'' Orange Wax/Purple Liquid/Silver Base & Cap

The Lava Classic 14.5" is the standard-size original lava lamp: a glass globe of orange wax in purple liquid on a silver aluminum base and cap. It runs on a 25-watt incandescent bulb (one is included) and plugs into a standard 120V outlet, so it works as a warm night light or a retro desk piece. The best new price is $34.95 at Coolest Toys On Earth as of November 5, 2026, with two stores listing it new.

What reviewers say

What should I do if my lava lamp becomes cloudy?

Don’t worry! Cloudiness is normal upon delivery. The cloudy appearance is due to the wax/lava splitting into tiny particles that have separated during the normal jostle that happens during shipping. A troubleshooting guide is included with all Lava Lamps. If additional help is needed you can use the following technique.

1. Set up your Lamp using the instructions provided in the box. Don’t turn your Lava Lamp on immediately. Wait 24 hours so that the wax can settle to the bottom of the globe.

2. Turn the lamp on until the wax has softened and starting to flow. This step may take 8-10 hours

3. Then turn the lamp off and let it completely cool down. This step may take up to 3 hours depending on the size of y our Lava Lamp **This step is critical as it is the cooling process that clears the lamp. During the cooling down process the wax starts to fall and acts like a Velcro pulling these small particles of wax together.**

4. Depending on the size of the lamp and how broken up the wax is in your lamp, you will need to repeat these steps 2-3 times per day for 3 to 14 days. Each subsequent cycle of running your Lava Lamp through a hot then cool down cycle will collect more and more wax particles. Over a short time your Lava Lamp will clear up.

5. Do not set up your lamp in areas that may get too hot or cold such as near heating or AC vents or in a window in colder areas. Unnecessary hot or cold areas can contribute to the cloudy issue with your Lava Lamp.
