It’s still wild how game-changing Metallica’s self-titled 1991 LP, a.k.a. The Black Album, was to pop culture. Nearly a decade into their career, the legendary thrashers redefined their parameters by slowing the tempos, while overloading the hookiness of their heavy essence. “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven," “Nothing Else Matters," “Wherever I May Roam” and “Sad but True” became major hits in the pop, rock and metal worlds, the kind of anthems that sell over 30 million albums worldwide and counting. Many artists have tried to make their own Black Album, but there’s no beating ’Tallica on this one.
